What is Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation?
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, also known as rehabilitation medicine or physiatry, is a medical specialty targeted at maintaining, enhancing and restoring function as well as quality of life in individuals with physical impairments or disabilities.
Our physicians, specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation, focus on a "functional approach" to care more so than many of the other healthcare providers who are in search of a medical "cure". Our goals are to maximize independence in activities of daily living (eating, grooming, dressing, toileting, hygiene, walking, etc.) to improve quality of life. We pride ourselves in coordinating comprehensive, patient-centered treatment plans utilizing the expertise of other healthcare professionals. Patients and their support system (family or caregiver) are educated and trained if possible to obtain the necessary skills for independent living within the community.
Physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists can work within inpatient or outpatient settings having a broad range of knowledge with musculoskeletal, neurological, rheumatological and cardiovascular systems.
Oklahoma Spine Sports and Rehabilitation physicians prescribe both inpatient and outpatient services. Inpatient care is provided at Mercy Rehabilitation Hospital – 5401 W Memorial Rd, Oklahoma City, OK 73142. Outpatient care is provided at the Neuroscience Institute (Mercy Health Center) 4120 W. Memorial Rd. Suite 118 Oklahoma City, OK 73120. For more information about inpatient care, please click here.
